Lesson 13: Form

Class# 13:  Form   April 13 - 17, 2015                  

Materials needed: 

Objects found around where you live

Digital camera/mobile phone camera

This class is going to be an introduction to the basics of sculpture and form as an exploration of using different media to create art. You will be creating a type of art known as Found Object Art. Found Object Art is the idea of taking something preexisting and elevating it into art. This type of art dates back to as early as the 16^th century when individuals collected objects and displayed them in cabinets.  It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that artists began to use found objects in sculptural art works.  One such artist is Marcel Duchamp.  Some examples of his work are found at the links below;

Form is a three-dimensional (length, width, and width) figure as opposed to shape which is two-dimensional.  Some examples of form are sphere, cube, cylinder, or cone. Form can also be illustrated in a two-dimensional drawing by including values to create the idea that there are three dimensions.

Homework Assignment:

Now that you have learned about form used in art it is your turn to try creating a found object sculpture of your own.  Using at least three different objects that you find lying around your house, create a three-dimensional found object sculpture based on geometric forms. See examples in the links at the beginning of this assignment.

After you have completed your found object sculpture, take four pictures of your found object sculpture.  One from the front, one from the right side, one from the left side, and one from the back.  Scan your pictures and upload them onto your Flickr page. 

The second part of this assignment is to write a one-page critique of one of your classmate’s sculptures.  Focus on the use of form, but also discuss composition, space, and proportion.  The following link provides more information on writing a critique. http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/how-to/tipsheets/student-critique.aspx.  You may alos use the rubric for this assignment as a guide.  You should complete the “Student Rating” section of the rubric.  Email the rubric and your own critique of a classmates sculpture to art101@comfsm.fm.  All pictures should be uploaded to your Flickr page by the beginning of the next week.  Any work that has not been uploaded by the evening of April 17^th will be marked down a grade. This concludes the thirteenth class for AR101.
