COM-FSM Community,
The Planning and Resources Committee (PRC) is taking the lead on discussions concerning the college’s mission statement.
The purpose of this wiki-page is to allow the COM-FSM community an opportunity to have valuable input into the development of an improved mission statement for the college.
Rational for reviewing the college’s mission statement:
A visiting team suggested the college review its Mission statement, as, “the college mission statement does not clearly define its students. In fact references to “uniquely Micronesian” and the “Federated States of Micronesia” imply the institution serves the entire population.”
“In its planning agenda for this standard, the college recognizes the need to revise the mission as needed and further, to develop goals and objectives to address better the “uniquely Micronesian” component of the mission.”
For the Mission statement, under the accreditation standard it states:
“Mission: The institution has a statement of mission that defines the institution’s broad educational purposes, its intended student population, and its commitment to achieving student learning.”
COM-FSM’s Mission Statement:
Historically diverse, uniquely Micronesian and globally connected, the College of Micronesia-FSM is a continuously improving and student centered institute of higher education. The college is committed to assisting in the development of the Federated States of Micronesia by providing academic, career and technical educational opportunities for student learning.
Please add any comments or ideas that will contribute to the improvement of the COM-FSM mission statement.
Historically diverse, brotherly equal and globally connected, the College of Micronesia-FSM is a continuously improving and student centered institute of higher education. The college is committed to assisting in the development of the FSM and sister nations by providing academic, career and technical educational opportunities for student learning.
Here's what I came up with:
The College of Micronesia-FSM is a student centered public institution of higher education committed to providing quality academic, career, and technical educational opportunities for student learning excellence. Historically diverse, the College exists to service its learners and communities throughout the four island states of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Aligned with the UH Community Colleges system’s mission, we are committed to serving all segments of our Hawai?i Island community. edited 15:36, 10 Feb 2012
The PPR group will prioritize programs today and PRC begin review Thursday. My problem is the COM-FSM is responsible for the FMI programs and we have no way to get a handle on that place. I try and think of our new president fielding questions about what they actually do--I have seen rough data on graduates and one would be hard pressed graduate-wise doing a quick division the Ambassador's way to justify the expense. What if the president asks for the study done prior to COM-FSM including the FMI? We performed no market analysis etc.for this-- the FMI as such was a political and prestige animal from the get go. It's a Marshall's Air--or Air Nauru thing. The pride Micronesians have in their history as great navigators is unmatched and rightly so. When the Hawaiians keep citing the costs of FSM immigration--there is always--" Oh by the way-- a significant part of your entire culture--navigation was restored and returned to you--by a Micronesian. But I stray--Congress said--we want this and will pay for it. So COM-FSM said fine--if you fund $600K per year--not impinging on our present Congressional appropriation o.k-fine. I am sure something like this will raise the hair on his arms--being person steeped in accreditation standards. An accredited institution as ours should not be running programs because Congress funds it unless we have some notion on how it will meet the WASC standards. But WASC demands the same standards at all five sites. FMI is a political creations---but we have the educational and accreditation responsibility...this is bothersome to me---and I am going to ask the president for his take on this--and to ally my fears...it's possible that Womack is all worried over something that is not worrisome at all. It would nto be the first time :) edited 05:09, 21 Feb 2012
